What Happens When Your Windscreen Is Replaced

ADAS calibration is required after windscreen replacement because the forward-facing camera behind the rearview mirror shifts position when new glass is fitted.

The camera tracks lane markings at 60+ frames per second. Even a 2mm shift at the windscreen translates to 1.7 metres of positional drift at 100 metres ahead.

Windscreen companies like Autoglass replace the glass but can't recalibrate the camera. They refer customers to calibration specialists. We see this in 14% of all customer enquiries.

The Grille Badge Problem on Volkswagen

Most brands hide their front radar behind a plastic bumper panel. Volkswagen hides theirs behind the VW badge on the front grille. That creates a calibration trigger no other brand has: badge swaps.

Aftermarket badges with different thicknesses or metallic coatings absorb or deflect the radar signal. Even refitting the original badge without precise alignment triggers error code C110300.

Volkswagen ADAS Systems

ACC

Adaptive Cruise Control uses front radar behind the VW grille badge. Maintains set speed and following distance with stop-and-go capability. Triggers after bumper removal, badge replacement, or front-end collision. Without calibration, ACC won't engage above 30 mph.

Front Assist

Shares the same front radar as ACC. Provides autonomous emergency braking up to 37 mph with pedestrian detection. Error C110b54 means no basic settings. The system is completely offline until recalibrated.

Lane Assist

Forward-facing camera mounted at the top of the windscreen. Needs recalibration after any windscreen replacement. Customers report lane departure warnings disappearing completely after glass work.

Side Assist

Rear radar sensors in the bumper corners. Blind spot monitoring fails after rear bumper repair or replacement. Both sensors need individual aiming.

Why 'Front Assist Not Available' Appears

The camera mounted behind your rearview mirror requires precise calibration to the road surface. Even slight mounting variations trigger the Front Assist warning. This is the single most common cause we see across all VW Group vehicles.

Minor bumper repairs shift front radar positioning by millimetres. The C110300 fault code typically appears. Your local garage finishes the bodywork but can't recalibrate the radar. That's where specialist calibration is needed.

We see 30% calibration failure rates with aftermarket glass on VW Group vehicles. The camera calibration completes and the tool reports success. But the system doesn't work. OEM glass resolves it on the first attempt.
Some customers report the warning appearing after dealer servicing or battery replacement that triggers system resets. Terminal 30 reset clears temporary faults, but permanent calibration errors need workshop recalibration.
