Do I Need ADAS Calibration?

The short answer depends on what happened to your car recently. ADAS calibration is event-driven - you need it after specific trigger events, not on a schedule. Here is a quick decision guide based on the most common scenarios we see from 420+ customer enquiries.

Quick Answer by Trigger Event

What HappenedDo You Need Calibration?Which System?
Windscreen replacedYes - alwaysForward camera
Front bumper removed or resprayedYes - alwaysFront radar
Front-end collisionYes - alwaysRadar + camera (both)
Rear bumper removed or resprayedYes - if BSM equippedBlind spot sensors
Rear collisionYes - if BSM equippedBlind spot + parking sensors
Wheel alignment doneSometimesCamera (make-dependent)
Battery disconnected or replacedRarelySystem reset (BMW, Mercedes, some Audi)
ADAS warning light with no known causeYes - diagnostic + calibrationWhichever system is warning
No work done, no warning lightNoNone needed

If your trigger event is in the "Yes - always" category, don't wait for a warning light to confirm. Many ADAS systems continue operating with incorrect calibration without displaying a warning. The sensors are misaligned but the system doesn't know it.

After Windscreen Replacement

Always yes. No exceptions. The forward camera mounts to a bracket bonded to the windscreen glass. When the glass is replaced, the camera position shifts. Calibration is mandatory on every ADAS-equipped vehicle after every windscreen replacement, regardless of whether OEM or aftermarket glass was used. See our windscreen calibration guide for full details including the aftermarket glass problem.

After Bumper Work

Almost always yes. The front radar on most vehicles sits behind the grille badge or in the lower bumper area. Removing the bumper for any reason - collision repair, respray, parking sensor fitting, headlight replacement that required bumper removal - can shift the radar mounting bracket. From our data, bumper repair is the single most common trigger, accounting for 20% of all calibration requests.

Rear bumper work requires calibration only if your vehicle has blind spot monitoring sensors (embedded in the rear bumper corners). Not all vehicles have BSM. If yours does and the rear bumper was removed, BSM recalibration is needed.

After Collision

Always yes. Any impact significant enough to require bodywork will likely displace sensors in the affected area. This applies to both the impact zone and potentially the opposite end of the vehicle if the impact was severe enough to flex the body structure. See our collision calibration guide.

After Wheel Alignment

Sometimes. This depends on your vehicle manufacturer. Toyota, Subaru and certain Volkswagen Group models specify camera recalibration after any alignment procedure that changes ride height or wheel geometry. Most other manufacturers do not require it for minor alignment adjustments.

If in doubt, submit your registration and we check the manufacturer's service documentation for your specific model. A diagnostic scan after alignment will also confirm whether the ADAS systems flagged any calibration requirement.

After Battery Replacement

Rarely, but it does happen. BMW, Mercedes and some Audi models can require an ADAS system reset after the 12V battery is disconnected or replaced. The calibration data itself may not be lost, but the ADAS control unit can enter a fault state after power loss that requires a diagnostic reset and verification.

If ADAS warning lights appeared after battery work and didn't clear within a short drive, a diagnostic scan will confirm whether recalibration is needed.

Warning Light With No Known Cause

Yes - this needs a diagnostic scan first, then likely calibration. 22% of our customer enquiries arrive with an ADAS warning light that appeared without an obvious trigger. Common root causes include gradual sensor drift from vibration over high mileage, a failed over-the-air software update, or a CAN bus communication fault where one unrelated component is sending bad data.

A full-system diagnostic scan identifies which sensor or module is faulting and whether the fix is calibration, a software update, or a wiring repair. Submit your registration and describe the warning - we advise whether a mobile diagnostic visit or a workshop appointment is the right next step. Pricing starts from £199 for camera calibration. See our cost guide for full pricing.

Do I Need ADAS Calibration? — Common Questions

Answers to frequently asked questions on this topic

If the service involved removing the front bumper, changing the windscreen, adjusting wheel alignment or disconnecting the battery, ADAS calibration may be required. Many garages and dealerships don't flag ADAS calibration as part of routine service work. If any of these trigger events occurred during your service, book a diagnostic check.
