How Long Does ADAS Calibration Take?
Calibration duration depends on three factors: which systems need calibrating, which method (static, dynamic or both) is required, and the vehicle make and model. Some manufacturer procedures are faster than others even for the same type of calibration.
Windscreen Camera Calibration: 60-90 Minutes
Forward-facing camera calibration after windscreen replacement is typically the fastest service. The technician prepares the workshop, positions the calibration targets, connects the OEM diagnostic system, runs the calibration procedure and verifies the result. Total time from vehicle arrival to handover is typically 60 to 90 minutes.
This assumes no complications. A damaged camera bracket, missing target compatibility for an unusual vehicle, or a required software update can extend the appointment. We recommend allowing two hours as a buffer when planning your day.
Radar Calibration: 60-120 Minutes
Radar calibration duration depends on which radar modules need attention and whether dynamic calibration is required. A single radar module (front or rear) calibrated statically typically takes 60 to 75 minutes. A vehicle with front and rear radar requiring both static and dynamic phases can take up to two hours.
Dynamic calibration adds approximately 30 to 45 minutes of driving time on top of the workshop preparation. Weather and road conditions can affect the dynamic calibration phase - wet or low-visibility conditions may delay the procedure.
Collision Calibration: 90 Minutes to 3 Hours
Collision calibration after accident repair covers multiple ADAS systems affected by the impact and subsequent bodywork. The duration depends on how many systems are involved. A rear impact that displaced one radar module is shorter than a front-end collision affecting the windscreen camera, front radar and parking sensors simultaneously.
For complex collision repairs, we recommend booking a full morning. The technician runs a diagnostic scan first to identify every system that needs attention, then works through each calibration procedure in sequence.
Full System Reset: 2-4 Hours
A full system reset covers a complete ADAS diagnostic scan followed by calibration of every system that is out of specification. This is the most thorough service and the most time-intensive. Allow a minimum of two hours. Complex vehicles with six or more ADAS systems - common on Volkswagen Group, BMW and Mercedes models - may take three to four hours.
We recommend booking a full system reset first thing in the morning, with collection available from the early afternoon. We call or text when the vehicle is ready.
Factors That Extend Your Appointment
Several factors can extend calibration time beyond the standard estimate. Older vehicles may require software updates before calibration can proceed. Vehicles with multiple ADAS systems all requiring calibration simply take longer to work through sequentially. If the diagnostic scan reveals a fault that needs investigation before calibration can complete - a CAN bus issue, a damaged connector, a module in a partial firmware state - additional diagnostic time is needed.
Battery state matters. A poll of 59 ADAS practitioners confirmed that connecting a battery maintainer during static calibration is near-universal best practice. A battery that drops below threshold mid-procedure forces a restart, adding 20-30 minutes. We always connect a maintainer as standard.
We communicate if your appointment is running longer than expected and confirm any additional work with you before proceeding. See our static vs dynamic guide for details on the two calibration methods, or the mobile vs workshop guide to understand which services can come to you.
How Long Does ADAS Calibration Take? — Common Questions
Answers to frequently asked questions on this topic
Yes. All our workshops have a customer waiting area. For shorter appointments like windscreen camera calibration, waiting is practical. For longer appointments like a full system reset, many customers prefer to drop off and collect later. We give an estimated completion time when you arrive.
